Future F1 Design

From the contest to the Official Team

— PROJECT NAME

FUTURE F1 TEAM DESIGN

Caranddriverthef1.com created a contest about F1 design. I participated and was among the finalists and the web contacted the winner and the four best works among the finalists to create the F1 Design Team. This is the link to present our Team.

— THE TEAM

Floren, Héctor, Tony and me.

— MY ROLE

EXTERIOR DESIGNER

The five members of the team had different professional skills: an architect, an illustrator, an engineer, a mechanic and me. We all published our progress on the caranddriver.com website. In addition, our followers could give feedback on the website and discuss our ideas and promote their own. We worked together with our news and their opinions, advice, etc. That’s how it worked during a year (2015 – 2016)

FIRST ARTICLE: DESIGN

Current F1 analysis, what we thought about it, and what we could improve. My contribution to this first article was the styling we would focus our development at our new F1, based in the 2000s. LINK

Proposals:

*Closed Cockpit. We think the future has to go in favour of a show with fewer risks and improvements in passive safety, in addition to improve aerodynamics.

*Wider single-seaters. Perhaps we are more in favour of limiting the width to find space on the track, and a minimum for safety reasons, but we believe that in terms of measures, we should not act in a restrictive way.

*Lighter seats. Working with the refuelling idea, it´s already possible to lighten weight with light-materials (increases costs). Let the teams choose how and where to lighten depending on their budget strategy."

SECOND ARTICLE: COCKPIT

Approbation of some ideas from the first entry. My work in this article was to design a cockpit to protect the drivers.

LINK

"Closed cockpit. It seems to be a safety element that is quite acceptable in the future competition and, without doubts, aesthetically determining. In the fans, there are both detractors and in favour. We are no less, and with arguments, we are trying to reach a consensus. At the moment, here are a series of ideas for domes understudy."

THIRD ARTICLE: GROUND EFFECT

We developed an aerodynamic and hide part of the car. My work here was focused on the ground effect. Also, we developed some engine characteristic and solve previous ideas.

LINK

"Ground effect. In principle, we believe the flat bottom (including the diffuser) should be standard to avoid the traps as much as possible. In this way, as all the teams have the same invariant flat bottom, the aerodynamic developments should focus on visible surfaces. On the one hand, it gives more prominence to the driver by equalizing such an important area, but without neglecting the constructors´ competition, making it more evident to the audience."

FOURTH ARTICLE: AERODYNAMIC

The F1 Design development has begun, and I proposed three concept cars with significant changes according to different aerodynamic levels. We followed studying and resolving previous ideas.

LINK

"The direction of aerodynamics. After closing the engine section, we can already get an idea of the dimensions of the car. Putting together the use of a generic flat bottom under the car (ground effect) and the DRS instalment, the aerodynamics is being further detailed. Anyway, there is still a pending issue, the treatment of the wheels aerodynamically speaking. And we bring you three different options with the concept of distinct designs to help you visualize it:

*Classic design: with uncovered wheels and aggressive design. That is the one we are accustomed to, and we have recognised through the last decades. Here we can´t offer a radical design unless to modify the flaps, grills or a small modification at aerodynamics. So this is the starting point.

*Semi faired design: with front and back wheels semicovered. For me, it was the most complex design among the faired and classic design. But even that, it´s the most balanced. It redirects the wind through the wheels to cool the engine, through the front wind to the flat bottom and the diffuser making the car redirect the airflow perfectly to keep it clinging to the asphalt. It´s the result of a study about airflow, a car more realistic if we think about the current technology and the less fantasy design to create it.

*Faired design: with all wheels fully covered. That´s a very futuristic car. It has nothing related to our time, maybe our technology, but I was looking for very different designs to open my mind and find the balance between classic, and futuristic.

A balance between an irregular profile (aerodynamically talking) and a regular profile. I was playing with the opposite of the classic design because I didn´t want a future car based on classic developments. I wanted a different point of view. Because of that, the front wing is divided and not united to the car, except by the wheels. That´s why the back faired wheels have got a small but prominence wing. All was an exercise to look for the elements that make the design different.

FIFTH ARTICLE: ILLUMINATION & FAIRING

Development of some new innovate concepts about aerodynamic and how it affects the exterior design. My work this time was to design the back wing and the engine´s refrigeration. Also, we want everybody to test the look of the LEDs on the car.

LINK

"LED Illumination. lower and different categories are increasingly advocating the use of these elements, which although there are irrelevant in terms of performance, can represent a significant aesthetic change. There are several possibilities that we are studying, ranging from front and/or rear position LEDs, to side LEDs marking positions or numbers during the race. A single colour, several, per driver or team… What would you do?"

Fairing and aesthetic design.

"As you let us know in the previous article, our car cannot excuse itself in "future technologies" or random predictions of what future will bring. And that is why your votes and opinions were more inclined towards a classic or semi-faired design.

It´s clear that an evolution is necessary, but with meaning, avoiding riot and riddles. That´s why we have based ourselves on a mixture of these typologies, taking a clear step forward without separating the other foot from the ground, although without forgetting the great advances that we also believe will come in a more distant future…

In the present project we seek, we think and debate a possible solution in the short-medium term, for all the current troubles at the competition.

Our mind will look for lines in tune with a new F and the technical concepts that we are discussing, and also, some lines that do not cover the tyres completely, although there is a certain permissiveness to help in the aerodynamic terrain."

SIXTH ARTICLE: SUPPORTED BY WINNERS

We resumed all the developments and explained how we are going to work to reach our purpose. My work in this entry consisted of drawing who were the drivers we were going to support with our designs because we wanted the best drivers for driving our future F1 cars.

LINK

"We have changed the rules about the entire design with: the engine, the aerodynamic, the cockpit, the wheels, the ground effect, the front & back wing, and the back deflector.

Now, is the time to create our new F1. We have decided to choose a famous driver to support our car with the team, colours and period of competition and illusion for the championship. We want to remember and bring back the best era of F1 to the future.

I choose Michael Schumacher. That is not only an acknowledgement of his career. It´s a tribute to how I admire him, how we enjoyed their victories, the uncountable fights on the road till the limit… This work wants to bring him the best of his era. And, above all, I want to send a positive message wishing a sooner and full recovery.

#WIN92"

SEVENTH ARTICLE

Penultimate entry, in which we published the most important parts of our designs. This was the beginning of the end, so we wanted to save the complete picture for the last article

LINK

"My proposal was called Future F2003MS and was inspired by the real F1 F2003GA. This car was driven by Michael Schumacher in his penultimate World Championship when I was 13 years old.

[The number 13 has always given me luck. I was born on a Saturday 13th of October. On the 13th of September, I got the highest mark in my final project degree, with honours. I received an email from Damiano Bolognini telling me I was one of the 41 best work in all the World at Automotive Design on the 13th of October, 2014…].

Choose a car, a year and a driver. The next step is showing you the complete design."

EIGHTH

ARTICLE

Last entry, which revealed the cars designed by each member team during the development of this project. My car represents three historical moments in the history of F1: link.

"Also, I want to give thanks to my F1 Future Team: Floren, Héctor, and Tony. Work with them has frankly been an unforgettable experience: we have worked together day and night during the development of this project, supporting, providing ideas, learning and above all enjoying our great passion: F1 and Design."

—Guillermina, at the end of this project.

1ST PICTURE

Monza GP (Italy) 2003: was the fastest race celebrated in F1, lasted 1 hour, 14 min. and 109.838 seconds. This picture represents the last lap at Q3.

-The Pole reached was 1´20.963 min.

-The fastest lap took 1´21.832 min.

-The Máx. Speed is 372,6 km/h.

2ND PICTURE

A battle between two champions: Mikka Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher.

We wanted to represent a battle of our chosen driver in a competitive race. I knew about the battles of Mika and Michael and drew this battle on an amazing race track: Abu Dhabi.

I love the location, the race at night and the colours. A futuristic race for our future F1.

3TH PICTURE

Schumacher’s first win with Ferrari, in a very rainy race at the Montmeló GP, Spain, 1996. He led the race since lap 13 and won the race by over 45 seconds from the second finalist. From this race, he´s called the ‘rainmaster’. I wanted to portrait this wonderful race in a picture, with all the emotion a rain race gives.

How it all begun?

The graphic designer who became an industrial designer

This contest was divided into two parts. During the time I worked for caranddriverthef1.com in an internship in Graphic Design, I got the responsibility to designed the banner of this contest. I had to design an F1, giving an idea about how they could design a future f1 ti win this contest. The real banner is this: link.

The second part is my idea. I participated in this contest and developed a car able to drive with the minimum resistance to the air, based on a plane. The sketches were based on animals like birds and sharks with a fundamental role. At the final digital illustration, you can understand all my ideas in this future Formula One.

This F1 didn´t win, but was at the Top20, and was showed for the popular votation. After this contest, the directors of caranddriverthef1.com chosen the five best designs and contact us to create the Official Group of Future F1 Design.

The rest is all you have just read. Thank you.
